Environment
- The environment is exploited by humans around the world; our natural resources are not
going to stay around forever. We need to find alternative resources to use, and utilize
alternative fuels. We need research on just how much global warming is going to affect us.
We need to stop all the partisan bickering and international disagreement. And we need to work
together. But all of these are perhaps too much to ask for. Therefore, as an individual, we need
to do what we can to help.
- If you drive, you should consider carpooling as much as you can. If you have a bike instead, or
want a good work out, go ride a bike some place rather than drive there. There are many
benefits to biking, and
the link I provided lists just that. What we do lack is advocacy and grassroots movements
within the communities. IBike.org
gives a few tips on how to make an impact on your community to encourage biking, and also gives tips on
writing a letter to the editor.
Care2 offers other bicycling resources and tips: you can read them here.
- However, sometimes, we can't bike to every place. And I realize that most people will drive their
cars, simply because it's easier on us. We also all know that gas is getting more and more expensive.
Care2 offers tips on how to make a tank of
gas last for a longer time. If you are looking to buy a new car, think about investing in
a hybrid car. What is a hybrid car? Visit here
for general information.
According to Care2, you can green the car you are currently driving as well. Simple steps include:
1) Obey the speed limit; driving faster than the speed limit decreases your fuel economy.
2) Make your car as light as possible. If you carry heavy objects in your trunk, unload them if the items are unnecessary.
- If you are traveling and need to rent a vehicle, try these green rental agencies (in the United States only):
Planet Tran, Green Cab (San Francisco,
Smart Cars (Hybrids only),
EV Rental (Arizona, California, Nevada only), BioBettle
(biodiesel-fueld Volkswagon bugs. Los Angeles & Maui only), and Green Limos (Los Angeles, Washington D.C., New York,
and San Francisco only).
- In order to fight global warming, Environmental Defense has provided ways you can lessen
your carbon emissions. At home, you can switch your light bulbs to energy-saving bulbs. Yes, they
are a bit more expensive, but in the long run, it will be for the better. Click here
for tips on switching your light bulbs.
To save energy at home, you can upgrade your household appliances to Energy Star products.
Also, unplug any items that you are not using. And you might want to avoid plug-in air fresheners, because those waste energy as well.
