House of Representatives: Global Warming

January 15, 2008

The U.S. House of Representatives is back in session today. And they’ve got some important catch up work to do.

Last month the Senate took the historic step of passing a global warming bill out of committee. This is an essential first step towards passing a bill through that chamber.

But the House has taken no such action, and both houses have to act before a bill can become law.

Take action today. Urge your Representative to call on both House leaders to prioritize passing effective climate legislation now.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) and House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman John Dingell (D-MI) have both pledged to move global warming legislation this Congress. And we need them to move forward on that pledge.

America, and the world, can’t afford to wait any longer.

Waiting just two years to pass national climate legislation would double the rate at which the U.S. will need to cut emissions – from just under 2% a year to over 4.3% a year – in order to bring emissions down to where they need to be by 2020.

We are hopeful that the new year will bring not only renewed commitment, but strong action from House leaders to ensure that 2008 is the year we begin to truly solve global warming.
